Nicolas Tolstoï is a French artist, marine biologist and polar expedition guide based in Switzerland. For more than fifteen years, his work has developed through sustained field experience in the polar regions and other extreme environments.
Working at the intersection of scientific observation and artistic practice, he has spent years navigating, observing and documenting glaciers, sea ice, the ocean and mineral landscapes undergoing profound transformation. This dual perspective informs a photographic practice grounded in attention, precision and restraint.
Through Hadeïdon, he develops a body of work situated between landscape, abstraction and material study. Ice is approached not as spectacle, but as an archive: a surface inscribed by pressure, erosion, time and disappearance.
His images reduce the visible world to its essential tensions. Scale becomes uncertain; geography transforms into skin, writing, memory or fossil. Colour is restrained, and retouching follows the logic of erasure rather than ornament.
